Jayden Chen

Class of 2026

St. John's School

Houston, Texas

I believe in the power of empathy, dialogue, and shared stories to connect us all.

Academic Interest

My passion for history and writing prompted me to pursue an Independent Study Project about the little-known history of the Hump airlift during World War II, culminating in a research paper published in the Summer 2025 edition of The Concord Review.

Community Service: Fundraiser -
Houston Shakespeare Festival

I organized a Shakespeare-themed online concert to help raise funds for my favorite Houston art tradition - the Houston Shakespeare Festival, which has remained free to the public for over 50 years. Thanks to the generosity of Houstonians, we raised more than $6,000!

Community Service:
Little Bards Academy

My sister and I founded the Little Bards Academy and launched the Little Bards Chat podcast to make Shakespeare accessible, fun, and enriching for children and young learners. Through peer-to-peer group learning, workshops, and online content, we aim to demystify Shakespeare and spark curiosity.

Summer Intern:
Harris County 133rd Civil Court

I had the honor of interning with Judge Nicole Perdue and her exceptional team at the 133rd Civil Court during the summer of 2025. They went out of their way to make sure I had a great learning experience. I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by everyday people and came to truly understand the profound meaning of "justice seasoned with mercy."

Summer Experience:
Washington D.C. Workshop

In June 2025, I was honored to be selected as a winner of the NSCDA National Congressional Essay Contest and spent an unforgettable week in Washington, D.C. The highlight of the experience was participating in our Model Congress, where I served on the Technology Committee. I also had the honor to meet U.S. Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher, who represents my home district, at her office on Capitol Hill!

Leadership:
East Asian Affinity Group

I'm proud to serve St. John's School's biggest affinity group, organizing East Asian history seminar and cultural showcases such as the EAAG gallery walk, a display celebrating East Asian authors and artists. During senior year, I launched a mentorship program, providing a space for underclassmen to connect in a new environment.

Leadership:
SJS Varsity Swim Team

I have been a member of the varsity swim team for four years and a co-captain for two. Some of my favorite moments include cheering on teammates as they achieve personal bests, serving hot chocolate after winter practices, bonding with the team during long bus ride to swim meets, and mentoring younger swimmers as they grow in confidence and skill.

Leadership:
St. John's School Orchestra

I have been a member of the school orchestra since middle school and have served as first chair violin in the Upper School. During my senior year, I was honored to be co-president and concertmaster, roles in which I mentored younger orchestra members, assisted the music director in preparing for major performances, and helped share a love of classical music in the SJS community.
